Tummy Time Made Simple: Gentle Ways to Build Strength and Confidence

Tummy time is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support your baby’s growth — but it doesn’t always come easy. Some babies love it right away, while others need time (and patience!) to adjust.

As a postpartum doula, I help families find gentle, realistic ways to make tummy time a natural part of everyday life — no stress, no tears, just connection and growth. 💛

Why Tummy Time Matters

Tummy time helps your baby:

Strengthen neck, shoulder, and core muscles Prevent flat spots on the back of their head Develop motor skills for rolling, sitting, and crawling Explore their surroundings and engage their senses

💡 Every minute on their tummy supports big milestones later!

How to Start Gently

Start small — even 1–2 minutes counts! Over time, your baby will build strength and tolerance.

Suggested progression:

Newborns: 1–2 minutes, 3–5 times per day 1 Month: 3–5 minutes, several times per day 2–3 Months: 5–10 minutes, several times per day 3–4+ Months: 20–30 minutes total daily

🩷 Tip: Pair tummy time with diaper changes or right after naps when your baby is alert and happy.

Positions & Props That Help

Not every baby loves lying flat on the floor, and that’s okay! Try mixing it up with these supportive positions:

🤱 Chest-to-chest: Lay your baby on your chest while you recline. 💛 Across your lap: Gentle and soothing for both of you. 🧺 Rolled towel under chest: Adds comfort and support. 🌙 Side-lying play: A great alternative when baby needs a break. 🪞 Use a floor mirror or high-contrast card: Keep things engaging and fun!

🩵 Save these ideas for later — they’ll make tummy time more enjoyable for everyone.

When Tummy Time Feels Tough

If your baby fusses (and they probably will at first), you’re not doing anything wrong! Try these gentle strategies:

Go short and frequent — stop on crying, end with success. Try before feeds or 20–30 minutes after for comfort. Get down at baby’s level — talk, sing, and make eye contact. Celebrate small wins — consistency matters more than perfection.

✨ Remember: Every second counts toward building strength and confidence.

You’re Doing Great

You’re not behind. You’re doing exactly what your baby needs — offering presence, love, and opportunities to grow.

Every tiny minute adds up to big milestones. 💛
